Wi-Fi: Why Your Signal Dies in the Kitchen

Wi-Fi is radio, and radio obeys physics. Frequencies, walls, and interference — the three ideas behind almost every 'Wi-Fi is bad' complaint.

The most useful sentence in all of wireless support is this: Wi-Fi is radio. Not magic in the air — radio waves, from a small transmitter, obeying the same physics as every other radio wave. Hold that sentence and nearly every mysterious Wi-Fi complaint turns into an explainable one.

Two frequencies, one eternal trade-off

Wi-Fi mainly broadcasts on two bands, and they behave like different vocal registers:

Every "why is Wi-Fi fast here and dead there" conversation is downstream of this one trade: range versus speed. Modern routers broadcast both and devices hop between them, which also explains the classic "it worked in the living room" ticket — the device silently switched bands.

Why the kitchen, specifically

2.4 GHz happens to be close to the frequency at which microwave ovens excite water molecules — so a running microwave is, from Wi-Fi's perspective, a jamming device leaking exactly the right interference. Add that kitchens are dense with metal (fridges, ovens — radio waves bounce off metal) and often sit behind the thickest walls in the building, and "the Wi-Fi dies in the kitchen" stops being a mystery and becomes a physics demonstration. Baby monitors, Bluetooth, and the neighbours' twelve networks all crowd the same band.

The other invisible culprit: channels. Each band is sliced into channels, and on 2.4 GHz only three of them (1, 6, 11) don't overlap each other. In a crowded building, every network defaulting to the same channel is a room full of people shouting over one another. A free Wi-Fi analyser app makes this visible in seconds — and moving to a quiet channel is the cheapest Wi-Fi fix that actually works.

The fix hierarchy

When Wi-Fi genuinely underperforms, the effective fixes, in order of bang for buck: move the router (central, elevated, out of the cupboard — placement beats everything); pick a clean channel; use 5 GHz where close and 2.4 where far; add access points or mesh nodes for real coverage gaps; and for anything stationary that matters — desktop, TV, console — run a cable and exit the radio business entirely. Ethernet doesn't care about your microwave.
